When you’re setting up a brand new travelers notebook (maybe your very first travelers notebook!?) one of your first questions will be “how many inserts can I include in this notebook?”. Of course, there’s the standard answer… four elastics means four inserts! Six elastics means six inserts! One insert means… one insert!
But if you’re like me and you want a big, fat, chunky travelers notebook full of allllllll the awesome goodies you can possibly stand you’re trying to figure out how to put even more inserts in your travelers notebook. Especially if the cover you’re lusting after has a set number of elastics.
Don’t worry… adding six inserts to a cover with four elastics is as easy as a jump band.
A jump band is a simple piece of elastic that you can use to add extra inserts into your travelers notebook. Really it’s nothing but a big rubber band… in a pinch you really could use a big rubber band! Most of them are made of 2mm elastic cording and come in different colors.
You can buy jump bands that are already pre-sized and ready to go from places like Etsy or you can pick up 2mm crafting elastic from the jewelry section of your local Michaels.
Making your own jump bands is super easy… literally all you need to do is measure the height of your insert and then cut your length of elastic twice that long. Once your elastic is cut you’ll tie a knot in the end… volia! Jump band!
If you want to make double, triple, sure your jump band is the right length you can put one end of your elastic in the middle of your insert and then tie the elastic around the spine. You want the elastic to be pulled snuggly around the insert (not to tight to form an indent but not too loose that there’s slack).
Alright y’all… now that you have your jump band it’s time to put it to good use. Go ahead and leave your insert with elastic tied around it be… then slide your second insert under the elastic on the outside of the spine.
Basically you’re placing the elastic in the middle of each insert so that they’re tied together with a big elastic jump band.
Easy peezy!
Now take one of those inserts and slip it under the elastic in the spine of your travelers notebook cover. The spine in your elastic will go snugly between your two inserts so that you’ll have an insert, elastic, and your second insert.
And you’ve done it! You’ve taken one elastic and added TWO inserts to it instead of one. If you’re going for a reallllly chunky travelers notebook you can take it a step further and add a third insert to the elastic in between the two inserts.
Now you have three inserts on a single jump band!!
That’s just crazy!
