How to Organize Small Items

Hey y'all

While I am busy making the hour and a half drive every day to my new job (yes that’s both ways!) I have a few spectacular guest posts for you! The first one? A post on How to Organize Small Items! Here’s the first fabulous lady!

Looking for a bunch of posts on DIY & Crafts? I’ve got you covered!
Click here to see all of my how to DIY & Craft posts in one place!

Hey there!

My name is Lyn and I am visiting from MidMichiganMom.com.  I love to blog about everything from DIY to Mommy tips.  I also throw in a little bit about Michigan here and there.
Are you looking for a new way to organize small items? I love buttons and I am ALWAYS looking for new and fun ways to display my craft supplies on the cheap.  I have a whole drawer of button filled baby jars. While that works…I want to display my cool button collection out for the world to see.  Also, shuffling through my drawers gets old…so here is my solution.

Materials

Small metal tray (from Dollar Tree)
Magnets
Baby food jars
Paint (I used chalkboard paint)
(Optional) Things to personalize your tray. I used Washi tape and Flowers.

I always use these little tray’s from the Dollar Store… because they are magnetic!

How to do it

Prepare tray for paint.  Cover the edges with painter’s tape. Scratch the surface to help the paint adhere better.  I chose NOT to use primer which was ok for my use (light use).  If you plan on moving your jars A LOT use primer!

Paint away! For Chalkboard pain apply at least 2 coats, allowing at least an hour to dry between coats. I applied 3 coats to mine.

Tip: Apply coats in various directions to ensure 100% coverage. 1st coat can be left to right, 2nd coat- up and down, 3rd coat diagonally. Allow 24 hrs for paint to cure.

While your tray is drying/curing, decorate your baby food jars.

I spray painted the lids black, then lined them with cute washi tape.
This was my first craft using the stuff and I. am. in. love!!!!

Next, add the magnet.
Hot glue will not be adequate enough to hold the glass jars.
Heavy duty glue (such as E6000) is best so that it will support the jars, especially when filled with something awesome such as buttons!

Next, decorate to your liking.  I used the same washi tape as I did on the lids for a uniform look.  I also hot glued the flowers on the corners for an extra girly feel.  What do you think?

I am displaying this on a shelf in my craft room so a frame holder was perfect.  If you are using a plate holder, make sure the weights of the baby food jars are equal(ish) or it will tip.

I’d like to extend a special thank you to Betsy for letting me share this craft project with you. She is a complete sweetheart and I enjoy getting to know her in the Blogging Community. Betsy and I are collaborating to bring you the #Thrift Store Swap in June.  Don’t forget to check us all out!

A big THANK YOU to Lyn for sharing this adorable craft with us today… I think we could all use a bit more organization for all of the little bits and bobs we have strewn about! Or is that just me? Either way I think it’s adorable! If you love Lyn as much as I do you’ll want to follow her everywhere so give Facebook, Twitter and Bloglovin a shout out!

I did something similar to that when making a chore board for my 11 year old! Works great when she does it! 🙂

Isn’t washii tape the best? I think it’s taking over the craft world since there are so many patterns!

Very cute idea! It’s so hard to figure out how to organize little things like that. They usually just end up all together in a big jar or something!

What a great idea for those mini items. I have never tried Washi tape. What is it? and where can I find it?

Washii tape is little, decorative tape! You can find it almost anywhere these days… any craft store (Michaels, Hobby Lobby) even Wal-Mart or Target seems to have a couple options. You can use it for anything you would use tape on… I’ve seen it on planners, bookmarks, craft projects… I use mine to hang small pictures on the wall! Happy crafting!
