Painting your home can be extremely frustrating… there’s just so many little steps! First, there’s picking a color, picking a sheen, figuring out how much paint you’ll need, then picking a paint… and then after all that you actually have to paint the wall! You need a paint color tracker to keep it all straight!
You’d think that with all the time and effort that goes into picking a paint color you’d have that paint name and sheen imprinted on your brain forever.
Nope!
Five years from now when your kiddos throw a baseball through the kitchen wall and you have to touch up the paint job you won’t remember which color you picked let alone which paint you chose! Trust me I’ve been there… I even wrote a post about picking my paint colors yet when I stopped to think about it tonight I couldn’t remember what color I used to paint our master bedroom! It’s only been a couple months… that color should still be firmly lodged into my brain!
Since we don’t all have blog posts to go back and double check I’ve come up with an easy solution… a printable paint planner! It’s literally a paint color tracker. An easy place to write down every little detail of your painting masterpiece… so you never forget a single color!
The best part? I’m sharing with all of you! Your very own FREE Paint Color Tracker! Aren’t you a lucky duck? Just scroll to the bottom of this post to grab your FREE printable!

Just check out my fully filled out paint color tracker! Typically people will have one paint that they’ve used throughout their entire home but because I work at Sherwin Williams I was lucky enough to snag several mistints for a super stellar price! I wasn’t even at my store but one day while making a delivery for the next little town the manager goes “aren’t you moving into a new house?
We have a few mistints that you might be interested in.” Isn’t it nice when co-workers look out for you? I hadn’t asked anyone to save me mistints but his generosity really helped us keep the price down… which the hubby loved! I wasn’t too torn up about it either ;).
Ready to Paint?! Don’t forget the painting supplies!
The moral of the story is that we ended up with several different brands and sheens so a paint planner really helps to keep everything straight! Of course satin, eggshell and low luster are all about the same sheen so things look just fine on the wall but it can get a little confusing on paper! Of course talking about sheens is really a whole post of its own!
If you’re painting your home go ahead and print this baby off to keep yourself straight… better yet after you fill one out go ahead and make a copy for the paint store and a copy for your painter! They’ll love how organized you are and it will be super easy to get your paint order tinted and ready to go!
I tried to include a wide array of rooms but if you have a larger home I did include a second page that has more space! Just keeping picking all of those pretty colors… I’ve got you covered!
Now if you’re thinking “what’s the use of a paint planner… in five years I’ll have forgotten where I put it!” Take a page out of my book… tape your handy paint color tracker to the wall in a utility room, laundry room, workroom cabinet. Somewhere out of space but still easily accessible. That way you’ll know exactly where it is when you need it! Ours is taped above the light switch in our utility room! That way we know exactly where it is… and when we leave this house and move on to the next one the next residents will know exactly what we used to paint every single space! Score!
Don’t forget to pin!
