How to Fix Small Tub and Sink Chips

Hey y'all,

I feel like we’re all friends here, I can totally trust you guys! Which is why I’m totally comfortable (ok 85% comfortable) showing you my… bathtub. Now remember that we live in a rental… an older rental… that needs a little love.

Our landlord replaced most of the appliances before we moved in: the refrigerator, the stove, the sink, the faucet, the doors (not an appliance but you get it), the tile flooring, the thermostat, the shower head… but not the bathtub. I get it… bathtubs and big, bulky and a pain to switch out but this one has definitely seen better days.

Yes it functions just fine… way better than our old one in Colorado, so really I’m a lucky girl! I mean baths are really a requirement of my life. I am a bath girl, showers are a necessity late at night or early in the morning but if I want to relax, a good book and a hot bath are always the ticket!

Unfortunately, while our bathtub works just fine (minus the drain plug that broke a couple months ago, I keep meaning to buy a new stopper!) it looks horrendous! The entire bottom of the bathtub is beat up, marked up, scored up, chipped up whatever you want to call it… it looks like someone took a weed-eater to it. The first time I saw it (remember my hubby picked out this house so I didn’t see it in person until we were moving in) I thought there were tons of little black bugs in the bottom! GROSS!

Not to mention little wavy lines, that look like, um hair? DOUBLE GROSS! I wasn’t sure what to do about it since bathtubs have to be water resistant… hello they hold water, and most of my cosmetic fixes include paint! I didn’t want to re-paint the whole tub!

Then last week one of our customers at Sherwin Williams told us an amazing story. All about how his kitchen sink was chipped at the bottom and he fixed it using white out! Genius right? It’s cheap and everyone has it! He said that he never meant for the white out to be a permanent fix… he was just messing around and it stuck! The white out was placed over a year and a half ago and it has stood up (all this time) to the hard ware and tear of dishes and water. It sounds like the perfect fix for my creepy fake bug tub.

So I went in my bathroom, uncapped my white out and got to work! It took a grand total of 5 minutes to fill in all of the spots and it looks great! Now since my tub is chipped all the way through the enamel it took two coats of white out to really cover the spots. After the first coat you could still see a little black peaking through.

Of course it isn’t perfect, our tub is an off-white and the white out is bright white. It blends fairly well into the off-white but if you get up really close you can tell they are two different shades. Of course my guests don’t head straight for my bathroom, pull open the shower curtain and stick their head in my tub… but if yours do this may not be the right fix for you.

I love how it turned out! My bathtub looks absolutely fabulous (compared to before!!!) and now when I go to take my bath I can breath easy. The white expanse of tub is the only thing I’ll see!

Even Jasper thinks it looks fabulous! 😉

Good for you, Betsy! That is amazing! I have a rather horrible chip in our bathroom sink. Now I know what to do!

And you have a really cute kitty. 🙂

This looks great. Need to try it on the bathroom sink. Pitted and cracked.
As to those “hairs”, I’d guess someone had a shower stool with no rubber tips on the legs!
