In some cases there is an easy, black and white, answer to the question: should I replace my light switch covers? My light switch covers? They’re cracked and broken… they definitely need replacing!
Just take a look!
The best part of this entire little light switch cover makeover? It’s one part of a much bigger makeover! It’s actually the fourth (gasp!) week of the spring One Room Challenge hosted by Calling It Home and we are cooking with gas!
We’re working on a few small projects so that when it’s time for reveal day we’ll have a big fancy reveal. I can’t wait!
Why should a cracked outlet cover be replaced?
Not only are the cracks ugly they can be potentially dangerous. They become dust traps, gathering all kinds of smut from the air and causing fires.
Yuck.
Of course, my light switch covers had breaks at the edges. That’s a tad bit better than a crack running directly through the middle of the electrical components (where dust can go directly into the outlet). However, even an edge crack allows dust and gunk to build up within the wall. Definitely not good.
Of course, if your wall outlet covers are fully functional you may be contemplating new covers for a different reason. New covers can be the perfect solution to your room makeover.
They can add an extra detail to a full makeover as well as new technology. You can find switch plates with usb chargers, safety covers for little fingers, cords for television hook-up’s… the whole nine yards. Form and function coming together to improve each little wall cover in your room!
Plus they’re pretty cool!
There are plenty of reasons to switch out your light switch covers but for my little kitchen makeover the main reason to switch was aesthetics. They needed to be replaced because of the cracks… and I could have easily replaced my old dingy cracked outlet covers with brand new white outlet covers.
However with the new back-splash going up I decided that white outlet covers would stand out from the smokey blue back-splash tiles in a way that was too obvious. So I picked new silver outlet covers that would blend into the smokey back-splash without a hitch.
They look pretty darn good with our gray blue walls as well!
I love how they look sunken into the new back-splash… and the best part is that after all is said and done we don’t have a single crack! Which means no dust, no gunk and no more cuts on my hand as I try to turn on the lights!
And that’s the best reason to change a light switch cover of all!
I’m so excited to see what amazing projects other participants come up with for this challenge! Be sure to visit Calling It Home to check out the projects being shared.

The new switches and outlets look great! I’ve been thinking about replacing some of mine as they do look like the first one that you have pictured. I may not go as fancy as you did, but they’ll be brand new regardless! Would you think that there is a limit of how unique I could go with them or not really?
I don’t think there’s a limit you just need to decide if you want them to blend into the walls or stand out. In our case they were going to stand out anyways because of the locations they were in so we went with a fancier option in a neutral color. If you are trying to draw attention to something else in the room (say a focus wall or furniture piece) stay neutral but if you have fairly neutral fixtures you can have a bit of fun! Hope that helps!
