A year and a half ago when the hubster and I were registering for our wedding we thought we had all of the boxes checked. After all I am the Queen of hoarding random things until they will one day be needed… aka the 21 year old who was able to furnish a 3 bedroom house straight out of college.
Of course what we failed to notice was that all of our beautiful furniture and home decor pieces would not help us when we finally moved into a house with a yard.
Had we thought about our new home we might have noticed that we didn’t own a lawn mower… or a grill… or anything related to taking care of a yard. We did receive a stainless steel grilling tool set as a wedding gift so I suppose we can man the grill… if we ever get one!
Of course part of putting together our home includes the outdoor space… and the hubby is itching at the bit to work on the yard. Mowing the grass is the one task I never have to ask him to do… he just loves taking care of the space! (Which seems crazy to me… I mean Alabama is hot y’all!)
Since we’re putting the yard on the forefront of this summer’s project list I thought I would back-track and put together a little must-have checklist of yard supplies. A lawn care checklist… a yard registry if you will.
So if you’re just getting married listen up… here’s everything I wish I had registered for:
A Lawn Mower
When we first moved into our little house with our little yard we were lucky to have a neighbor with a lawn mower. We borrowed it a few times before they moved far far away and we were left mowerless… sad and mowerless.
Then winter came and we were able to go a few more months without a mower… but then summer came and we had to buy a mower or live in constant fear of the city mowing the grass for us and charging us $300! (Who knew they could do that? #yesIamnaiveandliveinabubble #waitIamanadultnow).
We’re full fledged adults now with our very own lawn mower! If you’re looking for your very first mower take into consideration if you’d like to spring for a mower with a bag or maybe even a riding mower. Go ahead and dream!
Bonus Tip: Make sure to buy a lawn mower cover or at least a tarp… you wouldn’t want your brand new shiny mower to become waterlogged!
A Grill
Down here in LA (that’s lower Alabama) grilling out is almost a requirement. Of course we’re still mooching off the family since we don’t own our own grill yet… but this one is definitely next on the list! A must have for fabulous summer cook-outs!
Flowers and Plants
One of the things I have looked forward to for the longest time is growing my very own garden. I’m not sure why since I’m the farthest thing from a green thumb… I kill all plants. Mom on the other hand is a gardening goddess… she can grow anything! A few (hard to kill) flowers and plants will spruce up the yard without being fodder for the dump.
Weed Eater/Edger
This one should be self-explanatory… once you cut the grass you’ll need to clean up the edges. Of course what I think of as self-explanatory and simple the hubby thinks of as super exciting. Every single time we walk past the weed eaters the hubster gets this crazy gleam in his eye… he’s obsessed.
Rake and Hoe
Just a tool of the trade you might need a rake to clean the yard of leaves or a hoe to clear the garden for planting.
Leaf Blower
Of course if you’re super fancy you can upgrade from a rake to a leaf blower! Plus you can use said leaf blower to make your very own toilet paper blower just like Joey on Fuller House! (On a side-note who else loved Fuller House?! I am loving all of the show re-boots lately!)
Lawn Furniture
Anything from a few chairs on the patio to a full blown sectional the main goal is to provide a cute little seating area for friends and family. If you have the space an outdoor living area is a great addition to any yard.
Scotts® Turf Builder® Bonus® S Southern Weed & Feed
When I asked Mom what I should use to kill the weeds and fill in the grass in our yard she recommended a bag of Scotts® Bonus® S. Since the lawn is the most important part of the yard (what’s the point of cute lawn furniture or pretty plants if the lawn is brown and ridden with weeds?!) starting with a bag of lawn feed is always a good idea!
Plus you get to watch the hubby walking around the lawn care section carrying a purple bag of lawn feed over his shoulder! Now that’s a great day! 😉
So far we have purchased exactly two of the items on this list (after a year and a half of being fabulous people with a yard!) Which two? A lawn mower and Scotts® Bonus® S. Our current yard has plenty of weeds and not as much grass as you would hope so this little baby is the perfect solution.
Plus it’s so easy to find we only spent five minutes at Walmart… which is perfect for a quick trip after work! We ran in and picked up a bag and were back home within the hour. How great is that?
My Mom’s a fantastic gardener and she told us to grab a bag… apparently it’s fabulous! Since our grass is no longer 4 feet high and resembling a tiny jungle (thanks to the lawn mower) we figured it was worth a shot! If we start work on growing a green lush yard now we’ll be able to dive headfirst into the fun stuff come spring… you know flowers and adirondack chairs!
The best part is how easy it was to apply… we just followed the instructions on the bag!
Maybe come summer time our yard will look a little bit more like Mom’s! Just look at the beautiful flowers blooming in the yard! She definitely has a green thumb.
If you’re just starting out with your yard don’t forget to take my checklist with you on your next shopping trip (or wedding registry trip!).
