I absolutely love the look of plush bedding… and I think everyone knows pillows are totally my thing. What I don’t love? Bedding sets that look like they all came out of the same bag. In today’s world the bed in a bag has taken over…and while some are fabulous, most are a sad combination of the same print on multiple surfaces.
So short of assembling an entire bedding set from scratch how do we use the basic bed in a bag to make fabulous bedding decisions? We mix and match bedding of course!
8 tips to change standard bed-in-a-bag bedding into Fabulous Bedding!
Change out the standard shams!
Add a special throw pillow or throw blanket with a fun pop of color!
Try picking a bed-set that is completely neutral… then change it up with fun pops of color.
Add throw pillows with sweet or whimsical sayings!
Try mixing two bed-sets together… one with an amazing pattern and one with an amazing texture!
For a lighter alternative try a duvet cover without the down as a throw blanket.
Try using reversible bedding that has different patterns on both sides!
Stay in the same color family when planing your decor!
Take a look at this very basic bed in a bag set… it looks very similar to the bedding in my master bedroom.
It’s very pretty! Not a single thing wrong with it… but it could have a bit more interest, pattern and dimension! For just a small change… try changing out the standard shams! For my own master bedroom I added a pair of shams from Marshall’s with a beautiful Moroccan pattern… and just a bit of color. You could also add a special throw pillow or (my personal favorite) a throw blanket with a fun pop of color!
Here’s another great example… this bed-set uses contrast to really change things up! Try picking a bed-set that is completely neutral… that way you can change out your fun pops of color! A warm red knitted throw for the winter or a sunny yellow blanket for summer! With a neutral backdrop you can really change things out whenever the mood strikes you! Plus how amazing are those pillow shams? For a bit of whimsical humor try shams with sweet sayings!
This next bed is chalk full of pattern which is an amazing way to add interest to any room. To spice things up try mixing two bed-sets together… one with an amazing pattern and one with an amazing texture! To tie the two together pick one or two throw pillows in coordinating hues. By picking one bed-set with a thinker comforter and one bed-set with a lighter quilt you can layer one on top of the other and be prepared for any temperature! If a quilt is to heavy a duvet cover without the down insert works wonders on those hot southern nights! We have a cream colored ruffle duvet cover that you will see in the summer months… my husband loves how it feels when it’s hot out, and I love the added interest the ruffles bring.
Of course you can always go pattern crazy! Try using reversible bedding that has different patterns on both sides! Then you can layer different patterns on top… as long as you stay in the same color family the patterns will play together perfectly!
