Back before I was married with a houseful of furniture, back before I decorated my first apartment, back before I started storing antique finds in the basement of my dormitory because my little dorm room was too small (yes my dorm RA was the coolest person ever)… back before all of this I was a high school student. Just the average high school student… but on the weekends my Mom would take me to this tiny little auction house about 20 minutes away.
It was my first experience with auctions… and my brother’s first experience with a summer job (he ran the concessions table… but that’s a different story). I remember sitting there week after week while these amazing furniture pieces would come in, be auctioned off and whisked away. I would gaze lovingly at the beautiful antique pieces and wish for the day that I could take one home!
As a high school student most of them were way above my pay grade (allowance grade? I worked part time off and on through out high school but that money went straight to fuel my after high school Europe trip. Which is a completely different story as well!).
I distinctly remember a pair of his and hers french chairs passing under my very nose… I wanted them so bad! What I would have done with them… I’ll never know. A Victorian bedroom set with two twin beds, a vanity and dresser also passed through.
I had dreams that I would one day own such a set! (So far those dreams are unrealized!)
Of all these pieces the only one I ever took home was this wooden secretary. Besides my tufted gossip bench it is my absolute FAVORITE piece of furniture. I love all of the little wooden nooks and cranny’s! Not to mention it was the very first piece of furniture I ever purchased… so it is very near and dear to my heart.
Despite my dislike for wooden furniture (I don’t know what it is but I just can’t stand most wooden finishes) I absolutely love the richness of this piece. It is the only piece of wooden furniture I NEVER plan to paint. Although I do plan to replace the missing pulls at some point!
