Craft Room Organization Ideas for Small Spaces

Hey y'all,

If you’re a crafter you likely have the same problem as any other crafty person… you have a million little tiny crafty things! Of course, being organized goes directly against the creative process (my room is always neat and tidy for five seconds before the mess explodes!) but the more organized you can be the easier it is to make something when the urge strikes. Which is why I’ve come up with a few fun solutions for craft room organization!

Of course, I can’t take all the credit. Each week I receive emails with fun questions and answer them here on the blog. This week I have a fun question from a reader named Katherine.

” Hi Betsy. I’m thinking of changing a bedroom to a craft room, need plenty of storage I have a very small budget, would love some tips.”
Thanks, Katherine

If you have a question feel free to send it to Betsy {at} Happilyeverafteretc {dot} com and I’ll put it in my list of questions! I try to answer as many as I possibly can. In the meantime let’s get down to the topic at hand: craft room ideas for small spaces!

I hope this helps you Katherine!

Craft Room Organization Ideas: Pegboard solution for organizing craft supplies

Tip 1: Craft Room Pegboard

Pegboard is really a crafters best friend… it’s inexpensive, lightweight, easy to install and can organize just about anything you can dream of. This large pegboard in my craft room was only a couple of dollars and can hold all the supplies I want at my fingertips!

Ir only took an afternoon to hang and was easy to spruce up with a can of rose gold spray paint and plastic pegboard hooks. Want to go a step further? Grab a set of these pegboard shelf brackets and you can add a quick and easy shelf to your pegboard!

Score!

Of course, a quick search will show you a whole world of innovative pegboard storage solutions. Like these little pegboard friendly jars! How cute would these look with rose gold tops?

Tip 2: Washi Tape Storage

Okay so you may not need to store fifty million rolls of washi tape (I do!) but this little storage rack was too genius not to share! It’s perfect for all kinds of little craft items (think things like thread or ribbon).

So even if you aren’t a planner girl (or a card maker!) this little wooden rack has so many possibilities!

Tip 3: Rolling Craft Storage Cart

These little carts may just be my absolute favorite craft room organization tip! They’re inexpensive and can hold so. much. stuff.

I have one that holds all of my pens and workbooks for brush lettering and another one that holds all of my cricut supplies. My best tip when it comes to your rolling craft storage cart is to use it for either the things you use most often (since you’re using them chances are you’re moving them from place to place… and wheels can only help!) or use your cart for all of your small items that you need to corral.

Like pens! Use a series of baskets or cups to keep everything nice and tidy and you’ll be set!

Tip 4: Craft Paint Storage

How many little tiny craft paint bottles do you have in your craft room? If the answer is less than 5 can you really call yourself a crafter? Even if you aren’t a painter everyone needs to paint something at some point… and these little craft sized jars are so cheap I find them piling up.

Before you know it they’re everywhere! So I love this little paint bottle organizer.

You can stack them on top of each other like the two in the photo or place them side by side in a drawer. Either way they’ll keep your paint bottles standing straight and ready to use. Plus if you store them upside down you can see the color of the paint easy peezy lemon squeezy… which is definitely a win.

Tip 5: Cricut Storage Ideas

When it comes down to it most of my craft room these days is devoted to my Cricut cutting machine! I have 2 explore air 2’s and a cricut maker (on the fence about which one to get? Read my comparison here!) and they take up a little bit of room!

Of course, the machine is just one simple part of the process… you also have to find storage solutions for rows and rows of vinyl! Chipboard, basswood, fabric… once you get started with Cricut it’s hard not to want all. the. things. So here are my favorite quick solutions to storing your cricut cutting machine.

Cricut Bookshelf Storage

I want a whole cricut craft room but sometimes you have to work with the space you have. Luckily I’ve found that your cricut machine fits just fine on a standard bookshelf. The machine itself takes up an entire space but it fits just fine… and since most craft rooms have some sort of bookshelf you can usually clear a shelf for your cutting machine.

With a few baskets on a nearby shelf for cricut supplies you’ll be able to cut to your heart’s content.

BONUS TIP: Want to spice up your standard bookshelf? Add a fun pattern to the back with wallpaper (or a stencil!). Check out the full wallpaper bookcase tutorial here.

Cricut Rolling Cart

If you have a smaller craft room to organize (say a closet, or simply the space behind the couch) these little rolling carts really are a one trick pony. They’re great for more than just pens and supplies… they can hold your Cricut collection too!

I absolutely love this rolling cart since it has space on the top shelf for your machine and plenty of drawers to hold all of your supplies. Even if you have a dedicated craft room these little carts are a great solution to storing your Cricut.

You can move it around when you’re working and there’s space both in front of the machine and behind the machine so that the cutting mat can slide back and forth while you’re working. Unlike the bookcase solution where you’ll have to pull your machine down to a flat surface whenever you want to work you can actually use your cutting machine right on the rolling cart. SCORE!

Craft Room Organization Ideas: Disposable Bag Dispensers as Cricut vinyl storage

Cricut Vinyl Storage

This is an absolutely genius storage solution… if I do say so myself! I have long since outgrown the vinyl storage on my pegboard and moved into baskets and baskets of vinyl all over my craft room. So when I see this I am struck by absolute envy… these little vinyl storage racks make me so jealous!

They’re technically plastic bag dispensers but let’s face it. THAT’S GENIUS. They’re inexpensive and can hold up to 14 rolls a piece… which is kind of amazing. If I had the wall space I would put these bad boys up TODAY. As it is I’m trying to decide if it would be too much if I lined the hallway outside of my craft room with these bad boys?

Especially now that I know they come in pink!

Tip 6: Glass Jar Storage Ideas

When you’re working with all. the. little. craft. supplies. seeing is truly believing. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve gone out to pick up another tube of paint or roll of vinyl… that I had somewhere in my craft room.

But if you can’t find it, it doesn’t exist! Which is why I love storing things in glass jars or clear storage containers as often as possible. Especially since craft supplies are usually bright and cheerful! You don’t need decor when your supplies are already fun to look at… just arrange them in beautiful containers and call it a day!
