It’s October… and that means Halloween! I love decorating for the spookiest of holidays but I’m definitely NOT all about the gore. I actually hate all things scary… so instead I decided to create a fun Halloween wreath for my front door!
Of course things are always crazy in our house so when I couldn’t find my wreath form I decided to make my own… using a wire coat hanger! I was fairly impressed with myself for this one y’all… I don’t know that I’ll ever buy a wreath form again!
I started with a normal coat hanger and tried to bend it into a circular shape… but quickly realized I have no grip strength! That wire was not going to move an inch, so I brought in the big guns. Have you seen those Hefty commercials with WWE Wrestler John Cena? Well the hubby is no John Cena but he bent that wire coat hanger in 5 seconds… perfect circle y’all! I think I’ll keep him ;).
From there I decided to twist long strips of my Hefty Trash Bags into ropes… I twisted the long ropes around my circular coat hanger to make a bulkier wreath frame! It sounds a little funky but since we’re tying tons of little tiny trash bag streamers over every inch of this thing the base layer can be a little funky! Actually the funkier the better!
It took about an hour to get to this point so all in all not a crazy time intensive process. Score!
The next step is to cut tons of strips from your trash bag… I cut large medium and small strips from 3 trash bags. I thought it would give my wreath a bit of dimension but it really didn’t make much difference, if I was doing it again I would cut large strips (about 3 inches wide) and maybe a few medium strips to make things interesting (maybe one and a half inches). The tiny one centimeter strips made no difference so I would leave them out!
The next step is easy… tie all of your strips on! It’s just like decorating a Christmas tree… when you think you can’t fit another single ornament on the tree find a new spot! The fuller the wreath is the spookier it will look, promise!
Ready to see the final product?
I think it’s my favorite wreath yet! The best part is that iBotta has a super awesome coupon for $1 off your very own box of trash bags… just in case you don’t have any handy. Of course my regualer readers already know how much I love iBotta but if you need the 411 here’s the scoop!
