This is the first inspiration board I have EVER put together for my own home! Does that surprise you? I love design and putting together a mood board is great for aesthetics… but I don’t live in a design paradise. I can’t run out to the store and buy everything for a room in one afternoon… nor would I want to!
I firmly believe that the best rooms are those evolved over time. Put together with pieces from our lives, our travels, our friends and families. Of course there’s always that one design piece you just KNOW will complete a room… or the trendy piece you just have to have! I’m not saying to skip the shopping basket all together… just make sure you don’t pull a Christina Yang.
Did you get that reference? Christina Yang… from Gray’s Anatomy? In one episode she decides her house needs to be done NOW. So what does she do? She heads to the nearest furniture store and tells them to box up an entire living room display! Her house looks amazing, completely finished in one afternoon… but where are the personal memories? The homey touches? Now that’s what I’m talking about!
So my guest room mood board is a combination of things I already own, things I’ve bought for this space… and inspirational items I believe would help tie the whole room together! Let’s see what we’ve got… shall we?
Blue Two-Toned Bed-frame: (Owned) My childhood bed will be making itself at home in our guest bedroom. This was my princess bed: with the four posters and the canopy… growing up it was the icing on the cake in a little girls paradise. I absolutely love the way Susie from Harris Marks Home painted this turquoise bed for a client!
My bed is almost identical to the one in the photo so you can imagine my surprise when I found the perfect inspiration photo when surfing pinterest! I’d love to go a smidge more french blue but other wise this two-toned paint job is absolutely perfect… re-purposing a piece of furniture I already own is the perfect solution!
Blue Jar Lamp: (Owned) I rescued several blue wine jugs from my grandparents house and at the time I wasn’t sure what I would do with them. However, when I saw this fabulous lamp transformation from the Inspired Net I knew that my little blue glass jugs would be the perfect solution! Plus this diy project will be way cheaper than buying the fabulous blue lamps I keep pinning over!
Gray Transparent Curtains: (Owned) I have four pairs of gray transparent curtains that my hubby and I picked out for the Craphole. We actually picked these out before I ever moved into the Craphole… but I knew at the time that we would end up married (or I hoped!) so I nudged my future hubby in a direction that would complement our future guest room. 🙂 This is also how I picked the perfect future guest shower curtain! Luckily my hubby finds these qualities endearing instead of creepy!
We Had Sex on This Bed Pillow: (Inspiration) Does this pillow need any explanation? Maybe we would only use this specific pillow for certain guests… like our friends not my mother-in-law. Although she does have a fabulous sense of humor… so who knows!
Shiny Mirror Dresser: (Inspiration) We don’t currently have a dresser for this space but I’m playing with the idea of a mirrored dresser for a bit of funky glam! Plus it’s a fun trendy piece that could easily be switched out if I decide I no longer like it… the guest room is fun for a bit of playing around!
White Nightstands: (Owned) Like my childhood bed I have a white nightstand from my childhood. With a bit of soap and (perhaps) a fresh coat of paint this little beauty will be good to go!
Blue Floral Bedspread: (Owned) I picked this bed-set up several months ago for $25! That’s right only TWENTY FIVE dollars! I was a bit apprehensive because I’ve never had a great sense of pattern but my hubby convinced me it was a great idea. I an still a bit nervous… but I suppose that feeling won’t go away until the space has finally come together and I can see it for myself!
Lovely Tray: (Inspiration) While you probably won’t see this particular tray in our room (it’s not quite the perfect shade of blue) it represents all of the (perfect) blue accessories I plan to find!
Gray Pillows: (Inspiration) While I am coming to love our new bedspread the set came with only standard shams… which means I get to pick Euro shams, decorative pillows and a throw blanket! I am leaning towards grey and white patterned euro pillows with a couple solid colored decorative pillows. Eeek! Pillows are my weakness… I can’t wait!
Blue Damask Rug: (Owned) This is the rug I purchased for my very first apartment! I absolutely love the pattern and hate regulating it to the guest room! However, my first living room was slightly tiny so it’s only a 5×7… which means that no matter how pretty this rug is it just isn’t big enough for our living room anymore! So for now it will live in our guest room and be pretty for our friends and family!
White Flokati Rug: (Inspiration) I am absolutely determined to own a flokati rug… I’m not sure what it is about all of that white fluffiness but I just love them! Unfortunately with our 3 fur babies and eventual real babies a white fluffy rug isn’t really the most practical decision right now! So I’m trying to justify using one in the guest room… either underfoot (layered on top of the first rug) or as a throw. We’ll see how it goes!
Mercury Glass Mirror: (Inspiration) Mercury glass is my jam… combining that with a beautiful mirror can only help to up the room’s glamorous factor!
Milk Glass Hanging Pendants: (Owned) I found two of these beautiful milk pendants at an antique store several months ago. They need a little love and care but they will be beautiful when they are cleaned up! I think hanging lights are the perfect solution for a tiny bedside table… they allow light to still be available but without taking up valuable surface area! Plus they were a mega steal!
Gray and White Damask Sheets: (Inspiration) These sheets are beautiful… they should add a subtle dose of pattern to the space without completely overwhelming the entire room.
Blue Garden Stool: (Inspiration) This is one of those trendy pieces I’m still trying to decide if I like or not… the jury’s still out. However, I need a small bedside table to pair with the small white nightstand already own. A garden stool in the perfect shade of blue (like this one)… this might just be the perfect solution.
Blue Flower Painting: (Inspiration) I love the shades of blue that are present in this painting… something like this would be perfect to tie the whole room together! I already own several small pieces but a large piece like this would be perfect!
I’m also thinking of adding a pop of pink in the form of a throw blanket or other accessory! What do y’all think? Am I missing an important piece in the room? What’s the one thing you love or the one thing you would change?
