DIY Rolling Cart Transformation: a Little Paint and Organization!

affiliate disclosure 3

Hey y'all

The DIY rolling cart craze might have started quite a while ago… with the introduction of the IKEA Raskog it seems like little carts on wheels are popping up all over the place!

I can see why: they’re small, portable, completely functional and add adorable storage to almost any room without taking up a large footprint. I’ve wanted one for eons but the IKEA icon is not the only rolling cart on the market!

Just last week I shared 10 different rolling carts… and all because I found this baby on sale!

Looking for a bunch of posts on organization & planning? I’ve got you covered! Click here to see all of my organization & planning posts in one place!

For only nine bucks I finally got my very own rolling cart! The white was fine but with a white desk and grey couch the back portion of my living room is only interrupted by the aqua of my fabulous office chair.

I definitely needed a little punch of color and this rolling cart was the perfect victim! So I picked a bottle of spray paint in a beautiful Jade color and sent the hubby into the back yard!

A pop of metallic silver on the wheels was all it took to give this little cart a completely custom look… now it blends perfectly with my space!

Hot Tip: Don’t settle for boring when bottle of spray paint can customize just about anything! Pick a color that works with your color palette and get to work!

Now comes the fun part… organizing! The only drawback to my little wire cart is the size… it’s kind of funky. Too small to fit binders and the slanted sides don’t truly support anything. Oh well… I have something way better than sturdy sides!

Adorable storage containers!

On top of these storage containers being absolutely adorable (I bought them forever ago and haven’t had a place to put them! I believe they’re tiny card catalog containers that have been spray painted. Either way I love them!) they provide the structural storage I need to hold little tiny clipboards upright.

Bonus Tip: Corral lots of little pieces in one big container! Instead of looking cluttered and messy they’ll look organized… like they’re in their proper place.

Since I work in the living room I have been battling a constant state of clutter for weeks now. Without a handy bookshelf or storage space nearby all the fun little desk things that you need to run a blog get piled up on my desk.

So not the best work space!

A handy rolling cart is the perfect solution… it keeps all of my desk supplies handy but conveniently tucked out of the way. Plus my desk is now clutter free and ready for a bit of serious productivity!

Bonus Tip: While you have the spray paint out feel free to spray your office supplies! A coat of metallic spray paint will instantly add a touch of glam to any item… and unify the multitude of supplies you’ve kept stuffed in a drawer since college.

Just make sure that your spray paint is able to stick to metal… then spray in thin layers! Presto chango! The stapler dried in less than 5 minutes!

Since I have a craft room I tried to keep this cart limited to supplies I actually need at my computer. Binder clips, stapler, hole punch, memory card reader, washi tape and my little tiny blog clipboards! We’ll keep the rest of the crafting supplies in the gorgeous antique cabinet down the hall.

Bonus Tip: Don’t forget to look down… while you’re customizing your cart go ahead and hit the wheels with a fun pop of color. Pick a metallic silver or gold to for a touch of sparkle… or go for a contrasting color to mix things up!

Just make sure to unlock the little wheels first… otherwise you won’t spray the entire wheel!

The best part about metallic spray paint? It can make just about anything look swanky! The little silver container that my binder clips are in is the same plastic container I bought them in at the store!

Yup cheap plastic that I would normally throw away… but a quick spritz with the spray can and they’re ready to display! Just make sure to hit these little plastic containers with extra thin layers. Paint and plastic don’t mix well so paint will drip down the sides if you apply the paint too heavily!

I absolutely love my little rolling cart… although my favorite part has to be my clean desk!

Which tip is your favorite?

If you loved any of my tips don’t forget to pin!
