Learning brush lettering can be quite the process but it is so. much. fun. Of course, when you’re starting out there are so many resources for learning how to form the letters and actually use the different types of brush pens. Once you start to learn the basics the best way to improve is practice practice practice.
There are several books I absolutely love for practicing brush lettering ( Hand Lettering for Relaxation by Amy Latta or Super Simple Hand Lettering: Traceable Alphabets, Easy Projects and Practice Sheets by Kiley Bennett) but if you’re looking to practice brush lettering without a huge investment re-creating beautiful inspiration pieces is wonderful practice.
Not only is the layout already done but you can focus completely on forming your letters and adding the flourishes. This is how I first started out when I didn’t want to spend a bunch of money on fancy brush pens or practice books. With a few pictures off the internet and a set of normal markers I practiced forming the letters and adding the flourishes.
Of course, a workbook will help guide you when you’re learning the letters but even a quick search for a brush stroke alphabet and a lined workbook is wonderful repetition! If you’re looking to upgrade this set of Tombow markers makes a great beginner pack with a few different options.
Once you move on from the letters themselves here are 37 brush letter quotes to practice with… that is quite a bit of inspiration! If you make it through the entire list you will have an entire stack of beautiful practice pieces and hopefully have improved your brush lettering along the way.
