What do you do when your coworker casually pulls out her phone and offers you a gorgeous (albeit a bit run-down) giant antique storage cabinet? You go ga-ga and immediately envision the perfect craft cabinet makeover… which is the perfect excuse to jump into this months Fab Furniture Flippin Contest!
This is my first time participating in the contest and I’m so excited to work with this group of talented ladies!
This month the sponsor is General Finishes… and they’ve very generously given each participant one quart of their fabulous chalk paint for a project! The best part? The gorgeous colors!
Since this month’s theme is “A Fresh Start” my funky old cabinet was the perfect culprit for a bit of chalk paint! Just take a look at these before photos!!
Yup this little cabinet is definitely in need of a fresh start! A little bit of work and this baby will be good as new!
Gorgeous isn’t it? I absolutely love the lines… and all the detail work! The trim is amazing but my favorite part…
The legs!
My second favorite part? All of the shelf space!!! Think of all the baskets and craft supplies that can be stored in this baby! It’s wide and deep and for the first time in my life I have a cabinet that will safely fit my 12×12 scrapbooks!
Eeek! How awesome is that!?!
I went back and forth over what to do with this piece but once I settled on the paint color it was fairly easy to decide. White details, gorgeous trim and a wallpaper liner for the inset panels! Honestly I was so excited day dreaming about this masterpiece that I could hardly stand it! I planned the entire piece out and by the weekend we had the piece prepped and ready to go!
Of course with a piece like this there was a little bit of “fixing” before the “ready to go”!
A tube of wood glue, a box of finishing nails and a few pieces of sand paper later we were ready to paint! And by we I mean the hubby… he definitely did all the prep work!
I didn’t get to take center stage until the painting started! Then it was my turn 😉
I wanted a hand painted feel and chalk paint is perfect for that! I carefully painted each little detail… not perfectly, not precisely but that’s the charm! I love how it turned out though! Look at all of those little groves!
Of course the hardest part was probabally the front door detail! Since it’s missing in places and a whole mess of highs and lows it was difficult to get the paint smoothly across each piece! Oh well… that definitely helps with the hand-painted look I was going for.
C’est la vie!
Plus… look at those legs! Woowza! This gal has curves!
Legs are always my favorite part of a piece. I guess I’m a leg girl! 😉
I really wanted mercury glass knobs but short of robbing a hardware store I couldn’t justify paying quite so much for 10 knobs! I decided that instead of selling my hubby’s kidney I would go with these cute little blue glass knobs. They’re the perfect shade of blue so they don’t clash and they let the white details stand out. The mercury glass knobs would have been great but they would have stolen the show… these little blue knobs are much classier.
So I only bought 4 mercury glass knobs instead of 10! I’m going to use them for my coffee table… I have about three fourths of my General Finishes chalk paint quart left so there’s plenty of projects on the back burner! Gotta love chalk paint… it goes so far!
Alright y’all I have a little secret to share… if I didn’t love the details on the doors I might just take them off and have open storage. I’m having a hard time not being able to see the fabulous wall paper 100% of the time!
It’s the same wallpaper I used to back the bookcases in my craft room/office so it was the logical choice for this craft cabinet… and it’s gorgeous! It was hard to cut the circles out of the top pieces but after that it was lightning fast!
Nothing a little wallpaper paste and a Saturday night couldn’t handle!
I can’t wait for my March when I get to participate in another Fab Flippin Furniture Contest… this one was so much fun! Plus look at the results!!! I always have fun painting furniture but this might be my new favorite piece! I am sooo in love!
Swoon!
What type of storage do you have in your craft room? Would a large cabinet like this one be helpful?
