planting ranunculus corms

Ranunculus

These beautiful blooms are grown from corms and come in a variety of colors. Depending on your zone you'll plant them in the fall (or the spring if your zone gets too cold) and then wait for a bounty of blooms. Corms are easy to plant and multiply as the season progresses... more corms means more flowers! Let's get started!

What's your ZONE?

Ranunculus corms cannot handle freezing tempatures... so before you plant them check your zone. Warmer areas (7-10 and higher) can plant these babies outside in the fall and they'll be fine through winter. Colder climates will need to wait for spring to plant these out... they'll bloom later but be just as beautiful!

1

Soak your Corms

New corms will be dormant... we need to soak them before they're planted! Place them in a bowl for 4 hours with room temperature water.  The corms should plump up and take on water! Anything mushy can be tossed out but most of your corms should be firm and ready for the next step.

2

Pre-Sprout  your Corms

If you have time you can pre-sprout your corms so they'll grow faster. Place the plump corms in a tray of 1-2 inches of moist potting soil. They can be pretty close together... pack those babies in! Keep the tray in a cool, dark place for 2 weeks and keep the tray moist. The healthy corms will start to sprout and grow roots!  If you're running low on time you can skip this step and plant your plump corms directly outside.

3

TIME TO PLANT!

Now that our corms are plump and sprouted let's plant them! Dig a hole 2 inches deep and place your corm inside. Volia! Planted! Plant your corms about 9 inches apart and remember to cover them if the temperature dips below freezing.

BLOOMS!

Weeks of

Ranunculus will typically flower for 4-7 weeks and the corms will only multiply. Each corm can turn into 4-8 new corms! If you're in a warmer climate they will spread as the years progress. If you're in a colder climate you'll want to dig the corms and store them for next year.
