With wedding season coming up (and my own one year anniversary recently behind us… May 17th! whoot whoot! ) I thought it would be nice to talk about picking a meaningful gift for your soon to be Husband (or wife if there are men reading!).
When I first sat down to pick a wedding gift for my soon to be hubby I knew that I wanted something that represented our lives together… not a silly trinket or small token that would later be forgotten. I wanted to pick something that he would truly cherish… and use in the upcoming months and years of our lives together.
There are so many options but before he ever proposed I knew exactly what I wanted to give him.

If you haven’t heard of “Open When” Letters they’re a series of letters that your hubs can open when… he’s missing you or dreaming of the future. My hubs absolutely loved them for his birthday last year!
I have kept a diary ever since I was a little girl, mainly for myself, filled with my thoughts, feelings, day to day actions… nothing earth shattering. However when I met my husband I quickly learned that he was fascinated by my diaries. Maybe because we live in a world where people seldom write the old fashioned way… with pen and paper. I like to think he was fascinated because they were my thoughts, my feelings and he wanted to be closer to me.
Either way before he ever proposed I went out and bought a simple black leather bound Journal… not a fancy colorful diary like I would normally pick for myself. But a plain Journal that I would fill with our life together over the entire year of our engagement. I knew our engagement would be filled with happy times, but I knew it would be hectic, busy, filled with family and friends and life. I wanted to capture those moments and to let him know how much I was always thinking of him.
So I purchased my Journal and I waited. The day after he proposed I found a quiet spot and I wrote the entire day down, every thought, every exciting feeling… and I did this everyday for our entire engagement. Sometimes I filled a page with nothing more than my love for him… sometimes I wrote about the excitement of being engaged or finding the perfect dress. Either way I wanted him to know how much he meant to me.
The Journal quickly spilled over into two Journals… and by the end of the year I had 9 Journals filled with our love. It is absolutely amazing to see him read the words that mean so much to me at the time. It is even better to see the smile that creeps across his face.
My hubby quickly realized what I was doing with the Journals… while he had always seen me write in a diary he knew the black, leather bound Journals were not for me. (I am much too colorful!) Of course he didn’t know what they said but I still wanted there to be a bit of a surprise for him when he opened his gift.
So at the very bottom of his stack of 9 black leather bound journals I placed his most important gift. During our entire year of engagement he had constantly remarked how much he wanted a new bible. His was old, from his childhood and well loved. It is falling apart at the seams really… I knew that his childhood bible was perfectly functional. But it was his childhood bible. I wanted to gift him with a bible that would be our family bible. A bible to read at night before bed, to cuddle up and teach our children with. A man’s bible instead of a child’s.
I found one I knew he would love and I had it engraved: May 17, 2014 Mr. & Mrs. Smith. One day our children’s births will be recorded in that bible… the same way our wedding was.
So maybe your hubby’s perfect gift isn’t a stack of 13 handwritten Journals and an engraved bible. My gift was a gorgeous picture frame for our wedding picture and a heart shaped necklace that my hubby spent quite a while saving up for. I wear it every day.
The point is to find what speaks to your spouse, what makes them happy, then you will know what means the most to them. Find what makes their heart sing… go from there.
